SERIOUS STEEL BIKES.

We don’t talk down other frame materials. Instead, we are adamant that steel is the best material for the kinds of bikes we design and ride.

Our ‘Natch!’ tubesets are 100% proprietary 4130 CroMoly. This means every model has a unique tubeset designed by our engineers to match the intended use and loading characteristics of the bike. In addition, sizes within each model have tubesets scaled to preserve optimum butting profiles. Our forks, too, are proprietary and model-specific. These features create the characteristic “Surly Ride” – comfort and compliance – that is consistent across all Surly bikes. Add to this foundation of proprietary tubing our assortment of custom dropouts, fittings, and castings. The frame is the most important part of the bike. Design details and frame features create a foundation that Surly riders can customize to make it their own.

The Karate Monkey - 27.5 plus

Years ago the Karate Monkey helped start the 29” wheel movement and, as time’s gone by, many companies – Surly included – have experimented with even more wheel sizes.

With so many different types and sizes of tires now on the market, riders have begun to understand the effect that tire width has on overall wheel diameter, and with ample tire clearance, you can see the benefits of multiple wheel sizes all on one bike. 27+ tires have the same rolling diameter as a 29” wheel, yet you get all the traction and floatation benefits of extra-wide knobbies. And that’s just the tires.

The Troll

Off-road touring can be a zesty enterprise, but it’s not without its perils. Bicycles are simple machines that are extremely efficient, but all simple machines carry along with them the chance of breaking down. This efficiency can get you in trouble if your bike decides to break down far away from the comforts of your parent’s basement. If you’re going to ride your bicycles where no one can see, you better take gear that’s up to the task. Troll is up to the task.
